How do I overcome fear??? Fear is an automatic response we have to unknown conditions. The majority of us feel fear when we are dealing with the unknown, and think of it as a signal to TURN BACK! GO BACK TO SAFETY AND COMFORT! THERE ARE TIGERS HERE!

Fear developed as an evolutionary response to help us survive in a dangerous environment. It triggers our fight, flight, freeze or faun responses. Whether you’re a stock, crypto trader, working in a corporate environment, or even just working online, this little part of you is constantly getting triggered. And it really gets in the way of achieving your objectives.

By watching this video all the way to the end, you will learn how to identify your go-to fear response and begin to zero in on the behaviour pattern that is destroying your opportunities for success in trading, or at work.

Historically Fear has kept us very, very safe.

In order to understand this, we must first unpack exactly how fear works. At a basic level, fear is a learned response in the body. It’s a feeling that gets triggered when the body recognizes a situation that is similar to one in our past, which caused us pain and discomfort. You see, the body and our peripheral awareness functions that operate in our subconscious are constantly scanning the environment for objects that we either want more of or less of. Objects that we desire, or dislike. Something that is important to us, or a threat to us. As you can see, it’s all about pulling things we like in and pushing things we dislike away.

This function when operating within normal parameters merely directs your attention. For example, if you are deep in conversation with someone on a patio, your attention might be grabbed by a sexy woman in a red dress that walks by. If you thought back, you simply could not describe the last couple people who walked by, nevermind the colour of their clothing. This exemplifies the fact that there is a subconsciouis part of us looking around FOR us, and directing our attention.

Where the Challenge lays with Fear

Normally, this is great! The challenge is what happens when the signal gets turned UP? For example, if you’re concentrating on something and you hear a LOUD bang. You have a jump or startling response; You need to go investigate what that was to alleviate some tension built up in the body. This tension is energy, proteins, and hormones being manufactures in order to get your muscles ready for a short period of high intensity. I.e. Fight or Flight.

What happens when it’s even more intense? For example what if someone was walking across a street and you saw clearly that they were about to get hit by a car? Your system might freeze in fear for them and for yourself. The fight or flight response is interrupted, and overwhelmed. Freeze happens. In relationship, corporate, and business there’s a fourth response that has evolved. Faun. This is a type of behaviour that is a bit of a more socially acceptable “flight” response.

F e a r in Corporate – An Example

Let’s take the example of Corporate. In this realm it’s quite common for men in charge to use a series of tactics (unconsciously) to trigger a fear response in their underlings. This has evolved because it means that they take orders and do things without a lot of questioning. That makes it more comfortable for those in charge. If you’re in a meeting, and they subtly threaten you, or something you want, it triggers fear and maybe even shame. You get very uncomfortable and basically become willing to do anything to get out of there, and make the feeling stop. This willing to do anything to “Flee” the situation is described as Faun behaviour. You end up agreeing to things that you never would want to, and your / your team’s boundaries are crossed.

However, it shows up for you, it’s all Fear. The RESPONSE to Fear is Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Faun. Anger, Disconnection, Shame, or a combination of those are other names for the emotional responses to the deeper feeling of FEAR.

And I don’t need to tell you HOW MUCH these responses get in our way. Maybe you’ve written a nasty text or email out of fear or loss. Maybe you’re accustomed to starting a fight with someone when all you really want is a hug and to feel better. Perhaps you walk out of a room when you really know you should face this person and lean into the conversation. Or maybe you sell your portfolio when things get rough and regret it a week later when things get going in the market.

Our Fear Response

Our Fear response is trying to keep us safe by letting us KNOW that there’s something we care about, and there may be a threat to that. Unfortunately, all the subsequent emotional responses get our bodies jacked up for running, or fighting, or enduring pain. This is NOT helpful in the concrete jungles we now live in. There are VERY FEW Things that can in fact physically harm us, and yet it seems like we get triggered over and over and over again throughout the day with fear.

How do I overcome this?

The question everyone is asking: How do I overcome this fear? This requires some meditative technology, and an ability to build up awareness of how we respond to situations. They say that for every year of daily meditation – at least 5 minutes a day – we build up 1 second between stimulus and response. This is so important since normally the time between a trigger and is getting angry or whatever is microseconds. EVEN 1 SECOND IS LIFE-CHANGING. So you GOTTA MEDITATE. Guys, even 3 months of daily meditation will be a game-changer for you – think about it. From MICROSECONDS to a whole quarter of a second. LIFE. CHANGING.

The next thing is beefing up awareness of the problem and actively working with it. Just sit back and ask yourself:

“What is a habitual negative emotional pattern that I have that is getting in my way today”?

Go ahead and:

  • CLOSE your eyes.
  • Allow the answer to come to you.
  • Don’t THINK about it.

Simply, ask the question and allow it to COME to YOU.

There. That’s the one.

Where in your body do you feel the contraction?

Now. What is the feeling in the body that happens JUST BEFORE the emotional reaction? Where in the body do you feel a contraction? Belly? Heart? Throat?

ZERO in on this feeling. This contraction.

Ask it, out loud: When did I first learn to feel this way?

Don’t judge the answer, what may come, simply observe and thank yourself for discovering whatever it is, even if nothing is forthcoming.

Get curious about what came up. Give yourself enough space to explore it.

Now feel grateful for whatever perspective you’ve gained on this feeling. Whatever progress you’ve had, give yourself a little pat on the back. This is an exploration, and it’s important to reward yourself for even engaging in it.

Thank this contracted part of yourself and promise it that you will be looking out for it to arise again. Feel whatever gratitude you can for this part of you, who is simply trying to tell you that there’s a potential threat to something you care about.

IT’S OK to FEEL THIS WAY.

Now as we come out of the meditation, contemplate what we have learned about ourselves. Perhaps there’s more information as to why we behave this way, why the contraction feels this way. Perhaps there’s a very good reason for it…and perhaps there’s an opportunity to rewrite the RESPONSE we have to that feeling. Change the story of our future to a more positive one.

How transformational would it be to rewrite our responses to these felt memories? How liberating would it be to open up our internal system to a new way of being?

This is the first step to overcoming the fear response. Awareness of when it is happening. Normally when we first start working on it, we only catch it after the fact. It’s very important not to feel bad about missing it – that sends the wrong message to our subconscious. Even if we catch it DAYS later, we should FEEL HAPPY that we INDEED CAUGHT IT AT ALL. And with that positive feeling, we reinforce the subconscious to help us notice it faster and faster.

YOU CAN do this on your own, and it’s a long and twisty path. If you would like some help, please check out my website below, or my 5-Day Meditation Challenge where I get a bit deeper into mastering your internal kingdom, and emotions. I work 1:1 with business leaders to achieve these results, as well as run group and corporate programs.
